Our
Memories Matter provides weekly reminiscence sessions for groups of older people, in order to reduce their social isolation
and improve their sense of well-being. Reminiscing (sharing memories) is a positive experience, helping those that take
part to feel valued and listened to. Most important of all the sessions are great fun. The sessions are facilitated by trained volunteers, using a variety
of props as triggers to encourage memories. The service is managed by a paid coordinator. We are currently reminiscing in two residential care homes, two day centres
specifically with groups of older people with dementia and at an assisted living facility. These facilities are located in
Hythe, Dymchurch, New Romney, Seabrook and Tenterden. A
quote from the Manager at one of the care settings where we operate…
“We have found all the volunteers kind and sensitive
to the individual needs, the sessions have been enjoyed by all those who attend, and a sense of wellbeing is noticeable directly
after the session.”…
and a quote from one of the attendees:
“I always enjoy myself and ask my family not to visit when the group
is on”
Volunteers receive a full induction and training
is provided in a variety of ways. Volunteers work in pairs or threes to facilitate sessions on a weekly basis in blocks of
10 sessions, usually with a month to six week break in between. There are regular volunteer support meetings and further
training opportunities throughout the year.
All
volunteers are required to have a CRB and reference check. To find out more about volunteering for Our Memories Matter
